Back-to-back houses in Starkey Lane - an update

Quite some time ago I asked whether there had ever been back-to-back or up-and-over houses in Starkey Lane ?

The question arose because Mandy Wass could remember being told that her great aunt Eva Webb lived "above" her family, but in a separate dwelling.

Then, when Helen Waller saw one of the photographs in our archive, she realised she had the solution to our mystery.

Helen was reminded of a house behind and at right-angles to where Mandy lived, shown arrowed on this section of a long-range view of the village. Mandy has confirmed that this must have been where Eva lived. She added:

From what I remember, my dad knocked down the house at the rear of ours; the flags in our backyard were the floor of the old house, and the garden walls were the walls from the old house. But I know my dad had to put windows and a back door in our house so, even though they weren't 'back to back', the house must have been butted up against ours at the back.

It's good to have a mystery resolved.

With thanks to Mandy Wass and to Helen Waller (nee Rogers)
